Golden Rescue
Mike devotes considerable personal time and resources to charitable causes. One of these is raising awareness of the availability of adult purebred dogs for families looking for four legged companions. Because Mike is frequently asked for information related thereto…
What is breed rescue?
Why get a rescue dog?
-
Rescue Dogs have known medical histories and in many instances a complete life history
-
Rescue Dogs are kept in foster homes in part to identify a dogs personality. As noted in the history of Keliher Forever Dogs, some like activity, some like resting, some like kids, some do not, etc.
-
Rescue Dogs are not puppies! They are house trained, they don’t grow, they don’t chew up your stuff as new teeth come in, etc.
- Most rescue dogs are simply having a forever home and are loyal trusting family members
How do I find golden retriever rescue in my area?
Bring your person to work day
Every day is “bring your person to work day” at our Dallas headquarters. As clients and friends know, the passion underlying Keliher Consulting is golden rescue. Since its inception, there have always been rescued goldens at work.
Max – Chairman Emeritus
Mike’s only non-rescue was Max who was also Mike’s first dog. Max became not only Mike’s dog, but an unofficial mascot of Gibson Dunn & Crutcher’s Dallas office. It was through an attorney at Gibson that Mike learned about breed rescue and became involved in a network of attorneys involved in that activity. As such Max attended a range of outdoor activities such as firm softball.
Those who found forever homes
In the language of breed rescue, the dogs brought in from shelters and other places go into a foster home. Once a suitable home is found and the dog is adopted, the new home is called the Forever Home. The following found Forever Homes at Willow Wood Lane.
-
Nick – Nick was found at the side of the road. He had been hit and run over by more than one car. He was nursed back to health although he never regained use of one of his back legs. The leg was not completely disabled, Nick just figured out he could run faster without it!

Belle - Belle came into rescue at age 8, which many consider to be an old dog. She had the manners and pedigree one would associate with a Highland Park girl, where she spent her early years. She entered rescue because a jealous second wife did not like her. Belle lived to almost 15 and was loved by all. She was a great ambassador for golden rescue and a sterling example of the wonder companions available through the program. For more on Belle.

Buddy – Buddy is a sad example of what happens when people get puppies on impulse. The original owners loved him when he was an exciting 10-12 pound ball of enthusiasm. As he grew, he was a much bigger ball of enthusiasm. By the time rescue was called, he had been chained in a garage for nearly a year. After some training and interaction, Buddy has become a wonderful guy and enjoys being with people instead of in a garage prison.

Kajun – Kajun was a girl names Sammie living outside in New Orleans. She was clearly very loved but not on the best health care plan. Life was good even if it was a little hot. Then a girl named Katrina came calling in 2005. Sadly Sammie’s family lost their house and due to medical issues, her Dallas cousins could not keep her. Sammie went into rescue was treated for heart worm and ear problems and emerged with a new name, excellent health and air conditioning. Showing she is a smart girl, Kajun now spends her days working in Jane’s office seldom venturing into the hot summer Dallas sun.
-
Conner – Conner was a street dog. He came into rescue through a shelter. He had big paws and walked at a happy mosey speed much like a big bear. Thus he became known as Conner Bear, although he picnicked more like Yogi Bear.
- Vic – Vic was a very senior guy when he was rescued from a shelter. He came with lots of aliments but also with a wonderful golden spirit. He was quite happy to spend the rest of his life working with two legged and four legged colleagues at Keliher Consulting.
